WELCOME...
to the homepage of New York Chapter 1, Inc. of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

HISTORY
The American Academy of Pediatrics was founded in Detroit in 1930; pediatricians from New York were active in its formation (Check the American Academy of Pediatrics website for more of the history of its formation, current organization, activities and officers).  By 1949 the state’s population had grown large enough for the AAP to classify New York state as a District by itself, and the state was divided into 3 Chapters, with Chapter 1 representing the Upstate area (50 counties), Chapter 2 representing Long Island (4 counties), and Chapter 3 representing the Greater NY City area (8 counties).  The Upstate population consists of 6,286,792 residents (2000 census; 33% of the state population) with ~1020 pediatricians and pediatric specialists to serve the ~1,571,700 children and teens less than19 years old, and 72,935 births in the Chapter each year.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of Chapter 1 is the same as for the District and the state.  We work with the District, and the National American Academy of Pediatrics to:

  • Provide our members with the best tools, skills and knowledge to remain the best qualified health professionals to deliver care to infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
  • Participate in educational forums in which issues of importance to children and pediatricians are addressed.
  • Work with individuals, government and non-governmental organizations to secure access to and delivery of high quality care within the concept of a “Medical Home” for all children.
  • Ensure that the decision-making which affects the health and well-being of children and their families is based only on the needs of those specific children and families.
  • Monitor the effect changes to the health care delivery system have on children and pediatricians.
  • Improve pediatricians’ awareness of the value of membership in the Academy at the Chapter, District and National levels.

OBJECTIVES

New York Chapter 1 is a non-profit organization (501c3) with the following objectives:

  1. To improve the health and welfare of all infants, children, adolescents and young adults in the State of New York.
  2. To unite qualified pediatricians of Upstate New York State into a representative organization for the advancement of the practice of pediatrics.
  3. To study the scientific, educational, social, economic, and legislative aspects of medicine in order to maintain the highest standards of practice in pediatrics, and to prepare and recommend necessary changes in existing or contemplated medical programs.
  4. To further the policies and the objectives of the American Academy of Pediatrics at the state and local level.
  5. To promote excellence in pediatric care by organizing programs of post-graduate education.
